The Burn Specialists were Shocked by Burn Regenerative Medicine in the Third World Congress of European Club for Pediatric Burns

This conference invited more than 100 burn specialists from all over the world: America, England, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, India, Brazil, South Africa, Hong Kong and so on. They all join the conference for discussing the prevention, treatment, and new progress for burns, especially for kids and babies. With the special invitation and arrangement of Prof. Andrew Burd, who is the management Chairman of this conference, Prof. Xu, Rong-Xiang attended the meeting as a special invited speaker.

The three days conference mainly includes the following contents: One, the burn doctors and specialists introduced the status quo of burn care in their countries. The specialists from American and England discussed about the technique of INTEGRA. Prof. “Mamta Shah” talked about her studies in Manchester University of UK about TGF function in the scar formation after burns. South African Prof. Heinz Rode retrospected the main causes, treatments and living problems of burn care in South Africa. Dr. “Nelso Piccolo” came from Brazil, he talked about his burn center which was established by his parents. There were only 7 patients at the beginning and now each year, more than 10,000 burn patients are taken good care of in the center. Prof. “Shobha Chamania” reported the status about burns in India. She said the main cause of burn in India is because traditionally they cook directly on the floor, which easily caught fire. So in India, the proportion of female extensive burn patients is much higher than male.

The second content of the conference is the group discussions. The attendees were divided into 4 groups to talk about “Prevention; Cost-effective Care: Small Burns; Cost-effective Care: Large Burns; Rehabilitation and Maximinsing Outcome”. The goal is try to establish a common criterion and standard for burn treatment all over the world.

Content three: How to reduce the expensive burn care cost. This part arose big attention from the specialists of the meeting, especially from the developing countries. As we all know, the cost for deep extensive burn treatment and the reconstruction is very huge, a lot of burn patients can’t afford it at all; so how to treat them to get the best result while expense as less as possible is a difficulty for everyone.

The keystone of this conference is the introduction and popularization of new technique and method for burns. It’s well known that before 1950s, there was no ideal way to treat extensive burn patients, because the wound would never heal! It was Dr. Murray who invented the surgical skin-grafting treatment to cover the burn patient’s wound with autografts, which successfully saved a lot of burn patients’ lives. From then on, this therapy has been popularized all over the world and became the main stream of burn therapy. Dr. Murray was the 1990 Nobel Prize winner due to his contribution of organ and cell transplantation.

But after 1990, more and more surgeons have applying themselves to develop new method for burns to regenerative the skin in stead of skin-grafting, which cause not only the disfigurement and disablement of burn patients, but also the spirit distress in their entirely lives. After 15 years basic research and successful clinical application, Prof. Xu and his invention----“Burn therapy by skin organ regeneration in situ” and product “MEBO” has been well accepted and very famous all over the world and is part of the main treatments for burns now. So Prof. Xu was invited as a special invited speaker for this conference, which is the key point of the keystone in this conference.

First, Prof. “Andrew Burd” introduced Prof. Xu to the attendees. He said he had heard about Xu’s talk twice in the international conferences. And immediately, he was attracted by the amazing treatment results of MEBO. He belauded Prof. Xu for his achievements of burns.

After that, Prof. Xu gave a 45 minutes excellent lecture, which included the following contents: 1) The demonstration of more than 60 cases deep burn patients (TBSA>90%) recovered as a normal person under the “Burn Regenerative Therapy with MEBT/MEBO”; 2) The standard clinical procedure for “Burn Regenerative Therapy”; 3) The mechanism of “Burn Regenerative Therapy” : The detection of “Potential Regenerative Cell” and its function; 4) The conclusions: the liquefaction and discharge of the necrotic tissue on the wound; the maintenance of physiological moist environment of burn wound; the control of infection and the nutrition supply of the whole body. With tons of results and living CD playing in the presentation, Prof. Xu talked about this therapy lively, which made everyone in the meeting exclaimed. The discussion part was very warm also. Just after his talk and before the applause subsided, one Dr. said: “Then what we are doing here! Do we still need to talk about what we are trying to do now?”

Dr. Nelso from Brazil praised Prof. Xu after the talk, “I am so impressed for your achievements in deep extensive burn therapy, I want to know how do you know it’s MEBO working there? Please talk a little bit more in details, I really want to learn.”

Xu: “It’s a whole theory and technique including a lot of aspects, which it’s not easy to explain in this short time, briefly, there are four major chemical reactions on the wound after applying MEBO, we have detailed information and paper for that, you are welcome to go to Beijing.”

The specialist from Italy was very excited about Prof. Xu’s talk, he said: “I believe this burn therapy, this technique will definitely won the Nobel Prize! You should publish it in Science, Nature, it’s so amazing!”

Xu: “Our research and study have been published in ‘The Chinese Journal of Burns, Wounds & Surface Ulcers” timely; and we are putting the data together and writing the paper for Science.”

One American Dr. said: “Your study, especially the clinical results are too good to be true, I know you mentioned in your talk, but I just want to ask you again, for the extensive burns, I mean, TBSA>80%, what is your survival rate?”

Xu: “Yes, as I just said in the talk, for burn patients, TBSA>90%, our survival rate is 92% under the standard technique of “Burn Regenerative Therapy”, in which, 87% recovered to normal persons without any disablement.”

The Dr. “Then what you did is incomparable with the way that we are doing, it’s amazing and unbelievable! But I have to trust my eyes here.”

The Chairman of the conference, who is also one of the founders, Dr. “Martin Meuli” gave a 5-minute special speak after the discussion. First, he thanked Prof. Xu came to the meeting and gave an excellent talk. He said: “Your MEBO is really amazing and I am so impressed. Thank you very much for coming to this conference. And you (he point to Prof. Burd), you did such a good job to bring Prof. Xu to this conference to let everyone here have the chance to listen, to know, to learn this amazing burn therapy. You are a great organizer. So, on the other hand, it’s your responsibility to go to China to learn this therapy in details and bring back to us, to burn patients, to everywhere in the world, which will be an excellent and meaningful enterprise!”

The next speak had to be postponed due to the ardent discussion of Prof. Xu’s talk. And when the tea break began, almost everyone came to us for the information and handouts and everything that they could have for more information. A lot of Drs want to collaborate with us. Prof. Xu answered their questions kindly and taken some pictures together with the burn specialists. The India burn Dr. told me that she would go to Beijing in the middle of Nov. of this year, and she would contact us and would like to visit our hospital and burn patients.

When Prof. Burd heard that Prof. Xu had to go back to Beijing for another important meeting the same day, he gave Prof. Xu a special gift prepared by him already, he said: “I will definitely go to Beijing for MEBO, and also a new institute will be set up in Hong Kong for some Chinese Medicine and MEBO. I really hope we can work together for the research and even clinical trail here. Thank you very much for your coming and what your said amazed everyone in the meeting, which makes this conference brilliant and excellent!”
