On September 29 (local time), Boston University hosted a thematic symposium titled “Small Island States in an Uncertain Global Economy.” The event featured Cabo Verde Prime Minister Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva and Boston University President Dr. Melissa Gilliam, who delivered keynote remarks. At the invitation of the organizers, Dr. Guoxin Tao, Chief of Staff to Kevin Xu, Chairman of MEBO Group, former APEC Host Committee Chair, and Executive Committee Member of the Bay Area Council (BAC), attended the event on Xu’s behalf. Dr. Tao met with Prime Minister Correia e Silva to discuss cooperation opportunities between the Bay Area and African economies, as well as to share updates from MEBO International’s August visits to Kenya and Nigeria.

The symposium was jointly organized by the Global Development Policy Center, the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, and the African Studies Center at Boston University. During the discussions, Dr. Nimi Wariboko, Director of the African Studies Center, and Prime Minister Correia e Silva exchanged insights on the economic resilience of small island nations and their responses to climate change.

This dialogue follows MEBO International’s recent strategic engagement across Africa. In mid-August, MEBO Chairman Kevin Xu, as a representative of the Bay Area Council, joined the California–Africa Climate and Economic Partnership Mission, led by California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin and Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Dilpreet Sidhu, which was received by Kenyan President William Ruto at the Presidential Palace. The MEBO delegation then visited Abuja, Nigeria, for in-depth exchanges with senior officials from the National Council on Climate Change, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Through ongoing participation in high-level international dialogues, MEBO International continues to expand its partnerships and influence across Africa, strengthening its role in advancing sustainable development and innovation-driven cooperation.
